Beef Tallow for Skin: Why We Use Tallow in Sēlkyn Skincare
I get asked constantly: why tallow? Of all the things to put on your skin, why go back to something as old-fashioned as rendered animal fat?
The truth is simpler than people expect. I've been making my own skincare for twenty years, though tallow hasn't always been part of it. Between years of working as a homebirth midwife and aged care nurse, and all that time spent learning what actually works on skin, I've watched skin at every stage of life: newborn, postpartum, ageing, sun-worn. Tallow is what I kept coming back to.
What makes beef tallow good for skin?
Tallow's fatty acid profile sits close to the oils your own skin produces. That's the simplest explanation for why a beef tallow balm absorbs the way it does: your skin recognises it, rather than treating it as something foreign to sit on top of. Grass-fed, organic tallow also carries natural vitamins A, D, E and K, the same fat-soluble vitamins your skin uses to stay resilient.
Where a lot of tallow skincare stops at tallow plus essential oils, Sēlkyn goes a step further. Whole herbs and botanicals are slow-infused directly into the tallow, so the fat-soluble compounds move into the balm itself over time. It's a slower process, and a messier one, but it's the difference between a tallow cream that sits on the skin and one that actually works with it.
Why essential oil free tallow skincare?
Our face and body balms are made without essential oils by design. Sensitive, reactive and compromised skin often can't tolerate concentrated plant oils, however natural they are. Taking essential oils out of the equation means the balm can be used on the skin that needs it most: newborns, postpartum bodies, and skin that's already inflamed or irritated. It's also why I feel confident recommending Sēlkyn for mature skin, the kind that's thinning, drier, and less forgiving than it used to be.
Tallow skincare for mature and sensitive skin
This is the territory I care about most. Most tallow skincare online is written for people chasing the newest ancestral health trend. I'm more interested in the woman in her fifties whose skin has changed and isn't sure what to trust anymore, or the mother looking for something safe enough for her baby and honest enough for herself. Organic tallow skincare, made simply and sourced properly, tends to be the thing that works for both.
Where our tallow comes from
Every batch starts with certified organic, grass-fed tallow from ethically raised Australian cattle. Handcrafted in small batches in the Byron Bay hinterland, each jar is made slowly enough that nothing needs to be rushed, including the infusion.
If you want to feel it for yourself, Apothica and Decadence are where I'd start. You can also read more of your questions answered on our FAQ page.
