If you've ever switched to a "natural" deodorant and found yourself sweating through it by lunchtime, or breaking out in a rash from the baking soda, you're not alone. Most natural deodorants are really just conventional deodorants with the aluminium removed — the odour-fighting approach barely changes. Tallow deodorant works on a different principle entirely, which is why so many people who've given up on natural alternatives end up surprised by how well it works.
What conventional deodorant is actually doing
Most mainstream deodorants and antiperspirants rely on a mix of synthetic ingredients — aluminium compounds to physically block sweat glands, along with fragrance and preservative chemicals to mask odour. On average, conventional formulas can contain 10 to 30 synthetic ingredients, applied daily to some of the most absorbent, gland-rich skin on the body. Some of these compounds are known to interfere with the endocrine system, affecting things like thyroid function and hormonal balance over time. None of this is necessary to stay fresh — it's just the cheapest, most scalable way to formulate at mass-market volume.
Why "natural" doesn't always mean it works
The first generation of natural deodorants swapped aluminium for baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) as the odour-control ingredient. It's genuinely effective for a lot of people — but bicarb is alkaline and can irritate sensitive skin, especially with daily use. This is the single biggest reason people give up on natural deodorant and go back to conventional antiperspirant: not because natural doesn't work, but because the specific formula they tried didn't agree with their skin. How tallow deodorant works differently
Tallow-based deodorant doesn't try to block sweat or mask odour with fragrance. Because tallow is structurally similar to the skin's own sebum, it works with the skin rather than sitting on top of it — supporting the skin's natural balance and helping reduce the odour-causing bacteria that are actually responsible for smell (sweat itself is odourless; it's bacteria breaking it down that causes odour). Our tallow deodorant paste is slow-infused with calendula and lavender for their soothing, skin-loving properties, then finished with essential oils that help combat underarm odour naturally, rather than covering it up.
Choosing between our two blends
We make two versions, because skin sensitivity varies a lot from person to person:
- Lemon Myrtle — uses a bi-carb and arrowroot base. It's highly effective at controlling odour and tends to be the stronger option, so if your skin tolerates bi-carb well, this is usually the one to start with.
- Frangipani, Eucalyptus & Mandarine — our bi-carb free deodorant, made for anyone whose skin is sensitive to bi-carb. It swaps bi-carb for diatomaceous earth, which is also a naturally alkaline powder, so you still get effective odour control, just without the irritation some people experience from bi-carb specifically.
If you've never used a bi-carb deodorant before, Lemon Myrtle is a good place to start. If you already know your skin is sensitive to bi-carb — or you've tried another natural deodorant and it left you red or irritated — start with the Frangipani, Eucalyptus & Mandarine blend instead.
What to expect when you switch
Both blends are aluminium-free, which means you will still sweat — that's normal and healthy, and it's not something tallow deodorant is designed to stop. What it does address is odour, by working with your skin's own chemistry rather than blocking a natural bodily function. Most people find it becomes part of the daily routine within a week or two, the same as any new skincare product.
